The Philippines, named Asia’s leading beach destination at the World Travel Awards, is seeking stricter security measures at popular tourist spots following the recent death of a Slovak woman and a South Korean man.
The Department of Tourism has urged relevant agencies to take immediate and concrete steps to enhance security in key tourist areas, Philippines News Agency reported.
“The safety and well-being of all travelers remain our top priority, and we will take every necessary step to ensure this environment is maintained,” the department stated.
On Wednesday, police discovered the body of 23-year-old Michaela Mickova inside an abandoned chapel on Boracay Island, Inquirer reported.
The female tourist had been missing for two days before her body was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition and partially unclothed.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The tourism department categorically condemned any act of violence or criminality that threatens the safety and security of tourists in the Philippines.
In a separate incident, a South Korean man was shot and killed by two robbers in Manila, the Philippine capital, on March 7.
The Philippines welcomed 1.16 million foreign travelers in the first two months of the year, slightly surpassing figures from the same period last year.
South Korea remained the top source of visitors, followed by the United States.
