Indrasabha a 1932 film that marked the beginning of the musical era in the Indian cinema featured 72 songs. In 1980 the Guinness Book of World Records recognised it as the film with most number of songs.
Indrasabha was one of the first Indian talkies released just a year after Alam Ara. It was an adaptation of 19th century Urdu play called Indra Sabha written by Agha Hasan Amanat. Helmed by Manila Joshi Indrasabha was an epic film with a runtime of 211 minutes largely due to its numerous musical sequences. James R Brandon mentioned in The Cambridge Guide to Asian Theatre that the drama featured 31 ghazals 9 thumri of gaya and Benares gharana 4 holis 15 songs and two chaubolas and five chhands with enough scope for dances as well. Moreover Limca Book of Records shared that the film had a song for ever major character.
No other film could beat the record of Indrasabha
While Sooraj Barjatyas Hum Aapke Hai Koun had 14 songs on the other hand Subhash Ghais Taal had 12 and Aditya Chopras Mohabbatein included 9 tracks. Whereas the evergreen Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) had 7 songs and Imtiaz Alis Rockstar comprised of 14 tracks. These films are considered some of the music-driven Indian films in recent years yet their total combined tracks are only three-fourth of the 72 songs featured in Indrasabha.
