Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI and BA rules for bringing babies on flights

As summer approaches and many families plan their getaways, it is important to understand your on flying with children.

Whilst toddlers and up are usually not a problem with most airlines, some do have special parameters when it comes to jetting away with babies. Here are the rules of flying with babies in place on some popular airlines.

Ryanair

On flights, babies aged less than seven days old are not allowed to travel on any flights. Once they are eight days old, they are able to travel and from eight days to 23 months, children must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, when flying, with one infant per adult. The infant must sit on the adult's lap, and they do not qualify for a separate bag allowance.

Ryanair does allow a baby bag, weighing up to 5kg and measuring a maximum 45x35x20cms, for tots travelling on an adult's lap. Adults travelling with an infant must also sit in the window seat, as this is where there are two oxygen masks. Baby changing facilities are available on Ryanair flights, and can be found at the rear of the aircraft. will also warm baby bottles if required.

If the infant reaches two-years-old before their return flight, they must pay the full fare for the return journey.

In regard to newborn babies, the airline also advises that parents or guardians ensure that the treating doctor agrees that the baby is safe to travel by air. The same applies if someone wishes to travel 48 hours after birth. If a cesarean section was performed or surgery was needed for the mother, then the minimum period before Ryanair will accept them for travel is 10 days. In this case, written approval from a doctor will also be needed.

British Airways

With passengers have the option for their child under the age of two to sit on their lap (an infant fare) or purchase a seat, which counts as a child fare. If passengers choose to have a seat for their child, they will need an approved car seat from the AmSafe system.

When an infant sits on a passenger's lap, the passenger will pay an infant fare, which is a percentage of the adult fare. However, unlike Ryanair, infants without a seat get a 23kg bag checked into the hold. If purchasing a seat for an infant, they will get the same baggage allowances as an adult.

For little ones, British Airways also provides complimentary carrycots, for travelling on . British Airways also requires that any pram or pushchair must be completely collapsible.

Jet2

charges £20 per infant under the age of two per flight. Jet2 does not need prior clearance for infants over seven days old with no underlying health condition. However, for infants between two and seven days old, passengers will need prior approval from Jet2.com.

Infants between two and 14 days old who have been incubated, ventilated or have had any birth complications will also need approval before they fly. The airline does not allow babies less than two days old.

Infants need to sit on the lap of their accompanying adult and be secured with an extension seatbelt, which will be provided by the cabin crew. Alternatively, Jet2 also allows passengers to book a seat for infants, where they will then sit in a car seat as long as it fits criteria. However, to do this passengers must contact Jet2's customer service team and there may be an additional charge.

In addition, adults travelling with an infant and who have already added a hold bag to their booking will automatically have an increase on their luggage allowance of 10kg per infant, free of charge.

easyJet

When flying with passengers with children under the age of five benefit from early boarding, and can have two additional items for the child in hold, for free of charge. These items can include a travel cot, pushchair, care seat, non-collapsible pram, booster seat and baby back carrier.

Travellers can choose their seats in advance, for a fee, to ensure they sit together. EasyJet regards infants as between 14 days and two-years-old, and babies under 14 days old are unable to travel. Between two and 15-years-old, passengers are regarded as a child and cannot travel unless accompanied by an adult aged 16 or older.

Pregnant women are able to to travel with the airline up until the end of their 35th week (32nd week for multiple pregnancies) and they do not need to bring a medical certificate.

TUI

Babies under the age of 14-days-old cannot travel with TUI and the airline recommends that families wait until their baby has received their first vaccination, which is at an age of around four to six weeks. Infants under the age of two will not have their own seat and will be expected to sit on an adult's lap.
