New Delhi: Lionel Messi the star player from Argentina will be absent from the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil because of an adductor injury. The 37-year-old was not part of the 25-player roster revealed on Monday by coach Lionel Scaloni. Lionel Messi sustained an injury while playing for Inter Miami in their victory against Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Sunday. The MLS team announced on Monday that Messi had an MRI performed to evaluate the severity of the discomfort in his adductor area. The examinations findings confirmed the presence of a low-grade injury in the adductor muscle Inter Miami further said. His clinical progress and response to treatment will determine his availability for competition. Meanwhile Argentine media initially reported Lionel Messi suffered a sore left thigh during Inter Miamis 2-1 victory. Argentina currently at the top of the South American qualifiers is set to play against second-placed Uruguay on Friday followed by a match at home against fifth-placed Brazil at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires four days later. Lionel Messi was not the only player missing for the two matches that could secure Argentinas qualification. Paulo Dybala Gonzalo Montiel and Giovani Lo Celso were also unavailable.
