India is making a big leap in eco-friendly transportation with the introduction of its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered train and is set to introduce the train by March 31 2025. This marks the country’s first green hydrogen project in the transport sector focusing its commitment to sustainable technology. The move has earned India praise for embracing cleaner greener solutions. The launch of hydrogen trains reflects India’s determination to speed up its efforts against climate change. Unlike diesel-powered trains hydrogen trains run on fuel cells that emit only water vapor making them far more eco-friendly. Route and speed details The train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana covering a distance of 89 km. Known for its scenic beauty this route will now offer passengers a greener and quieter travel experience. The hydrogen train will be powered by a 1200-horsepower (HP) hydrogen fuel engine making it more powerful than similar trains in Germany and China which operate at 500-600 HP. The hydrogen train will run at speeds comparable to regular trains i.e. at the speed of 110 km/h. Passenger capacity While the maximum number of coaches is five in other countries the hydrogen train will have 10 coaches. It will be able hold 2638 people making it suitable for a large number of commuters. According to media reports each train will be manufactured at a cost of Rs 80 crore and the Centre plans to operate hydrogen trains in mountain areas to improve sustainability and conserve the environment. The first train will be operated by the Northern Railway and the authorities plan to make Indian Railways carbon-neutral by 2030. Cutting-edge technology Equipped with advanced horsethechord technology the hydrogen train is expected to enhance efficiency and reduce operating costs. This technological upgrade represents a major step forward for the railway sector making train travel both cleaner and more economical. Vision for greener railways The project is part of Indian Railways Hydrogen for Railways initiative which aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The government has allocated Rs 2800 crore to develop 35 hydrogen-powered trains along with the required infrastructure. Some of the proposed routes include: Matheran Hill Railway Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Kalka-Shimla Railway Kangra Valley Railway Nilgiri Mountain Railway Leading the way in sustainable transport By embracing hydrogen-powered trains India is positioning itself as a pioneer in sustainable transportation. This innovation may encourage other nations to follow suit contributing to a global shift toward cleaner and greener mobility solutions.
