National Payment Corporation of India i.e. NPCI is now preparing to make a big change in UPI. According to media reports, NPCI may soon remove the "Collect Payment" feature from UPI from person-to-person transactions. However, it will continue for large merchant transactions. NPCI has decided to gradually eliminate this feature from the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform to address the growing concerns of fraud caused by the "Collect Payment" feature.

What is UPI's "Collect Payment" feature?

This is a "pool-based" feature of UPI in which the merchant demands payment from the customer. In simple language, when you choose the option of your favorite UPI app for payment while shopping online, you automatically reach that UPI app where you see the amount of payment and have to approve it by entering the PIN. This feature of UPI is called the pull payment feature, through which merchants can receive payment from customers. Common people do not use this feature much but it is used a lot in business.

What are the concerns about this feature?

Nowadays many types of online fraud are happening. In one of these types of frauds, UPI's pull payment feature is being used a lot. A pop-up message comes in many people's phones and as soon as they enter the pin, the money from their account is withdrawn. NPCI wants to stop this and promote QR codes and push payment.

QR code will get a boost.

Payment through a QR code is considered a safe technique. Even now, payment is done through this method on many apps and websites. For example, while making a payment on IRCTC, instead of entering a UPI ID, the QR code of that payment appears on the screen. Apart from this, a push system can also be promoted. That is, just like you make payment in the normal way by opening the UPI app on the phone and entering mobile or UPI ID.
