In the film industry its common for movies to have two reported budgets. One is the bit exaggerated number made up to create hype among audiences and the second one is real and most often less than the first. Same is the case with this film there are two budgets but both have valid claims to be the real figure. We are taking about Kannadas first crowd-funded film Lucia. Directed by Pawan Kumar the film first collected funds from the audience and at least Rs 51 lakh was raised. This was the total crowd-funding for the film. However when the film was completely the number rose to Rs 1.1 core. While speaking to Bangalore Mirror directed Pawan Kumar reacted to the budget saga and said We realised that the kind of film we wanted to make could not be done with Rs 51 lakh. So we managed to rope in some investors and the budget went up to Rs 1.1 crore. Technically the film was planned for an online audience but after the increase in budget makers were propelled to release it in theatres. Rather than calling it a crow-funded film makers labelled it as a crowd-sourced film. Released in 2013 this psychological thriller featured Sathish Ninasam Sruthi Hariharan and Achyuth Kumar in lead roles. The film was highly appreciated for its innovative storytelling sparking a new wave in Kannada cinema. Lucia went on to earn approximately Rs 2.5 crore surpassing its production budget with massive numbers. Moreover the films satellite rights were sold at Rs 1 crore adding to the films financial success.
