Bollywood legend Madhubala is often hailed as one of the most beautiful actresses in Indian cinema. Often referred to as the tragedy queen of Bollywood Madhubala earned the title not only because of her on-screen roles but also due to turmoil in her love life. While her love for Dilip Kumar and marriage to Kishore Kumar is often well-know its less commonly known that she first fell in love with Prem Nath.
Madhubala and Prem Nath starred in four films but their love deepened during the 1951 film Baadal. According to Madhubalas sister Madhu the actress boldly took the first step in their romance by proposing to Prem Nath. The couple fell deeply in love with each other even hoping to get married one day. However their different religious backgrounds made it difficult for them to take that step. Some reports suggest that Prem Naths father was opposed to the idea of his son marrying a Muslim woman leading to their breakup.
Later Madhubala came close to Dilip Kumar but that relationship could not go far. Their nine-year-romance ended tragically due to Madhubalas fathers disapproval and a court case involving the film Naya Daur. Later there were rumours about the actresss linkups with Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Kamal Amrohi Kidar Sharma but not a single relationship went far.
In 1960 Madhubala tied the knot with Kishore Kumar before they left for her treatment in London. They remained married until her death in 1969. Before she moved to London doctors had informed her that she had only two years to live but she remained bedridden for nine years.
Seen in some of the most iconic films including Mughal-e-Azam Mr. & Mrs. 55 Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi Half Ticket Howrah Bridge Kala Pani and Barsaat Ki Raat Madhubala is regarded as the Marilyn Monroe of India.
