Kolkata Knight Riders will defend their title in IPL 2025. Kolkata Knight Riders is one of the most successful teams in IPL. But the start of IPL was not very special for this team of Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan. It proved to be a flop team in the initial seasons. Especially in the year 2009, KKR finished at the bottom of the points table. After this bad season, a dispute was seen between Shahrukh Khan and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
Actually, in the year 2009, the head coach of the KKR team was former Australian cricketer John Buchanan. Then Sunil Gavaskar had strongly criticized John Buchanan's controversial move of implementing the theory of multiple captains in the KKR dressing room. But Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shahrukh Khan had hit back at Sunil Gavaskar's comments about franchise coach John Buchanan and asked Gavaskar to stay away from issues related to his IPL team.
Gavaskar had described Buchanan as a failed former cricketer who asks international players to do what he cannot do. He wrote, 'To comment on his theory of multiple captains is to give it the importance it does not deserve, but what needs comment is how he got his Queensland friends lucrative jobs in KKR. The owner 'poor' has no idea that he is being exploited.'
Shah Rukh Khan defended Buchanan by saying that there is a lot of difference between Gavaskar's playing time and now. He also jokingly said that if he has any concerns, he should consider buying a team and running it his way. He said, 'I respect Mr. Gavaskar. His knowledge of cricket is a billion times better than mine. But this is an era in which Mr. Gavaskar has not participated, yet his knowledge of the game allows him to comment. I have spent money yaar, there is a lot of passion. If you have a problem, you can buy your own team and run it the way you want.'
However, Shah Rukh Khan later revealed that he had sent an apology to former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar for his statement a few days later, when he was in America. He had said, 'I have not said anything against Gavaskar. I just wanted some breathing time to do something new. If he felt so, I have sent him an apology because he was in America at that time.'
