A man in his 40s has been sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for one year after breaking into a restaurant in South Korea only to fry chicken and drink beer.

The court in Daegu found him guilty on Wednesday of stealing another person’s property by trespassing at night, Korea Herald reported.

According to the indictment, the man was a former employee of the restaurant.

In August last year, he broke in overnight and helped himself to two portions of fried chicken and alcohol, worth about 84,000 won (US$57), The Straits Times reported.

He admitted to knowing how to fry the chicken because of his previous work at the restaurant.

Although South Korean law allows for a maximum sentence of 10 years for such a crime, the court issued a more lenient sentence due to the small value of the stolen items.

Korean fried chicken, or Charinis popular for its signature “thin, crackly and almost transparent crust,” as described by The New York Times.

The chicken is typically seasoned with spices, sugar, and salt both before and after frying, and is often hand-brushed with sauce for an even, glossy coating.

This fried chicken is considered popular snack among foodies in South Korea.
