GH News March 22, 2025 03:06 PM

A recent media report has sparked discussions about banks across India switching to a five-day workweek starting in April 2025. The report claimed that this change was due to a new regulation allegedly announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This news quickly gained attention with both employees and customers speculating whether financial institutions would remain closed on all Saturdays and Sundays from next month.
However the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-checked the report and confirmed that the claim was false stating that there is no evidence to support it. According to PIB “A news report by Lokmat Times claims that starting from April banks across the country would operate five days a week following a new regulation issued by RBI.”
Media Report Claim About Bank Branches?
As reported by Lokmat Times the RBI has made a regulatory decision that will limit banking services to five days a week meaning banks will no longer operate on Saturdays. The report indicates that starting in April 2025 banks will align their schedule with that of government offices observing Saturdays and Sundays as holidays.
RBI’s Official Notification!
The Reserve Bank of India has not officially declared a transition to a five-day workweek for banks. Currently banks continue to operate on the first third and fifth Saturdays of each month. Nonetheless ongoing discussions between the RBI and the Indian Banking Association (IBA) have been taking place regarding the implementation of a five-day workweek. Banking unions advocate for this change suggesting that it would improve the work-life balance for employees and align with international banking standards.
Current Guidelines For Financial Institutions Banks To Remain Open?
In addition to national and regional holidays bank branches are not open on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. They operate on the first third and fifth Saturdays. All banks are closed on Sundays.
Is a 5-Day workweek for banks possible in the future?
It is worth noting that the Indian bank regulator RBI has not announced any changes and a 5-day workweek proposal is under consideration between financial institutions and authorities.
