New Delhi: Ever since Donald Trump assumed office he has introduced several radical changes in the policies of the government especially regarding immigrants and migrant workers. now the Trump administration the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is about to make several changes to the H-1B visa programme. The H-1B visa permits American employers to hire workers from foreign countries for the work that requires a particular set of skills. It is worth noting that Indians form a big chunk of the H-1B programme beneficiaries. According to a data released by the USCIS in 2024 Indian-origin tech companies acquired a fifth of all H-1B visas issued by the United States. The USCIS data further added that 24766 of the 130000 H-1B visas were granted to Indian-origin companies between April and September 2024. Infosys received 8140 visas TCS 5274 visas HCL America 2953 visas Wipro 1634 visas and Tech Mahindra 1199 visas says the USCIS data. Jeff Bezos-led Amazon got 9265 H-1B approvals. Here is the list of top companies by H-1B approvals in 2024: Amazon Com Services LLC: 9265 approvals Infosys Limited: 8140 approvals Cognizant Technology Solutions: 6321 approvals Google LLC: 5364 approvals Tata Consultancy Services Limited: 5274 approvals Meta Platforms Inc: 4844 approvals Microsoft Corporation: 4725 approvals Apple Inc: 3873 approvals HCL America Inc: 2953 approvals IBM Corporation: 2906 approvals According to a Pew report India remains the dominant country of origin for H-1B recipients. In 2023 73 percent of approved applicants were born in India followed by China at 12 percent. No other country accounted for more than 2 percent of approvals. Since 2010 Indian nationals have consistently received the majority of H-1B approvals. A major portion of approved applications in recent years have been renewals rather than new applicants. In 2024 65 percent of approvals (258196 applications) were renewals while 35 percent (141207 applications) were new requests for initial employment.
