Many believe that having a bona fide superstar in a film guarantees a blockbuster. However there are times despite all the star power the movies crash at the box office. Today we take a look at one such major setback for Ajay Devgn- a film that failed to make an impact at the box office. In fact it was such a massive failure that it couldnt even recover half of its budget. We are talking about the biographical sports drama Maidaan released in 2024. Directed by Amit Sharma and bankrolled by Boney Kapoor the film headlines Ajay Devgn as the legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim under whose leadership India secure gold medals in Asian Games in 1951 and 1962. Besides Ajay the film starred Priyamani Gajraj Rao Rudranil Ghosh in prominent roles. Made in Rs 250 crore the film managed to rake in just Rs 68 crore as reported by Wikipedia. Even though the film released on Eid it failed to attract audiences ending its total collection with very disappointing numbers. Maidaan faced multiple delays due to COVID-19 pandemic and Mumbai cyclone. Initially its release date was announced as December 11 2020 but later the date was pushed forward to August 13 2021. The film suffered huge post-production delays and the official date April 10 2024 was booked for its theatrical release. Producer and film business expert Girish Johar shared his take on Maidaans box office failure. He felt that audience couldnt relate with Boney Kapoors sport drama. I think Maidaan did not do well for quite a few reasons. I feel that the audience somehow could not connect with the film. Despite getting good reviews from certain reviewers the audience felt that it was duration-wise a little long. The music of the film also could not connect with the audiences. So there were a couple of points which the audiences found and couldnt connect with the film. He said while speaking to HT Digtial. Maidaan had a theatrical clash with Ali Abbas Zafars action thriller Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. The film featured a multi-starrer cast including Akshay Kumar Tiger Shroff Prithviraj Sukumaran Alaya F Manushi Chhillar and Sonakshi Sinha. Made in Rs 350 crore the film too bombed at the box office earning just Rs 66 crore in India.
