There was a time when actors were classified as heroes and villains in Bollywood. There used to be a race among the heroes to reach the top while there were some villains who overshadowed the heroes. Pran was number one among them. Due to his powerful performance on screen he became a villain in the eyes of the people. The situation was such that women used to hide after seeing him and people did not want to name their children Pran. Such a popular actor had to work hard to establish himself in the film industry.
There are some people who can never be forgotten. Pran may not be amongst us today but he is alive in the hearts of the audience because of his films dialogues and acting. Pran who started his career in the 1950s ruled the industry for almost 2 decades. According to Rediffs report when Pran came to Mumbai at the time of partition he had to struggle a lot.
Pran was empty-handed even after doing 20 films
Talking about the initial phase Pran had said that After working in more than 20 films I thought the industry would welcome me but I was wrong here I had to face a lot of hardships. I remained unemployed for more than 6 months. I even had to sell some of my wifes jewellery to pay my household bills.
Pran who came to India during the Indo-Pak partition did his first film Yamla Jat in Lahore in 1940. After working in many hit films he moved to Indore and then moved to Bombay. Talking about the Indo-Pak partition Pran said When riots started in Lahore in 1947 I sent my wife to Indore with our one-year-old child. My sons first birthday was on 11 August 1947 and my wife told me to come to Indore or else she would not celebrate the birthday. I reached Indore on 10 August and an announcement was made on All India Radio that a communal massacre had started in Lahore. I could not go back so we came to Bombay. On the eve of independence I reached Bombay with my family on 14 August 1947.
Praans first film in Mumbai was Ziddi which was released in 1948. After this he worked in films like Putli Grihasti. But after doing AVM Productions first film Bahar the situation improved Sohrab Modi cast him in Sheesh Mahal. Pran had said that most of my films were becoming hits so my demand kept increasing.
