N Chandrasekaran the current Chairman of Tata Sons-- the holding company that runs the Tata Group-- started out from humble beginnings and rose to the very top of Indias largest conglomerate after Ratan Tata -- the legendary Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group who passed away in October last year-- decided to step down.
Born in a farming family in 1963 in Mohanur in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu Natarajan Chandrasekaran completed his early education at a government school and later earned bachelors degree in Applied Sciences from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology and then pursued a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree at the Regional Engineering College in Tiruchirappalli.
Chandrasekarans journey with the Tata Group began in 1987 when he joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as an intern and quickly rose through the ranks to become Chief Operating Officer (COO) in September 2007. In October 2009 at just 46 years of age N Chandrasekaran was appointed as the CEO of TCS.
N Chandrasekarans bond with Ratan Tata
N Chandrasekaran worked closely with Ratan Tata for the majority of his career and the two men developed a deep bond and personal friendship backed by mutual respect. When Tata decided to step down from an active leadership role in the group he picked N Chandrasekaran his close confidant and friend to lead the company into the future and appointed him as the Chairman.
Recently months after Ratan Tatas demise N Chandrasekaran shared a fond memory of the late Tata Group Chairman Emeritus recalling how the beloved industrialist always made it a made it a point to personally receive Chandrasekaran and see him off whenever he went to meet him.
In the last few years he was not well. We met twice a week or even more. There was not a single occasion where he didn’t come to the door to receive me or see me off. I told him Sir you don’t have to do this. But he would insist. This was his courtesy. For him doing the right thing was important. Every time he made a decision he would put himself in the shoes of others to ensure he was being fair the Tata Sons boss said at 25th ET Awards for Corporate Excellence where Ratan Tata was posthumously honored with the Jewel of India award.

In a documentary titled Working: What We Do All Day hosted by former US President Barack Obama that premiered on Netflix in May last 2023 N Chandrasekaran offered glimpses into his personal life revealing how he was a essentially raised on a farm in rural Tamil Nadu and worked in familys fields as a kid
Chandrasekaran revealed that upon growing up he chose to pursue a different career path that ultimately led him to where he is right at the very top of the Tata Group Indias largest conglomerate.

While there is no publicly available data about the wealth possessed by N Chandrasekaran various reports have pegged his net worth to be around $100 million (around Rs 855.9 crore). As per reports the Tata Sons Chairman took home an annual salary of Rs 65 crore in 2019 which increased to Rs 109 crore in 2021-2022 and is likely to have witnessed a further increment since then.
