Ever since the impact player rule was implemented in the IPL, there has been a ruckus over it. New Zealand and Gujarat Titans all-rounder Glenn Phillips has also reacted to this. He believes that the impact player rule in the IPL is currently working but it may sometimes create problems in the development of all-rounders. People have different opinions on this rule but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented it at least till the 2027 season.

Getting an additional batsman as an impact player gives the team chasing the target an opportunity to take an aggressive stance from the very first ball. Similarly, the team bowling later can play an additional specialist bowler in place of an all-rounder. Glenn Phillips told PTI, 'I am neither in favor of it nor against it. It allows the team to do different things. But I think at some stage all-rounders can be out and this can have an impact on international matches, international T20, international ODIs.'

He said, 'So for now, it is a great entertaining brand of cricket. But I think what IPL has done well is to change the rules according to the environment. Of course, the impact player rule is working at the moment but then they can bring another rule and make the game more entertaining.' Last season, Rohit Sharma said that he is not a fan of the impact player rule as it hinders the development of Indian all-rounders. Before the current season, Hardik Pandya said that it is difficult to include an emerging all-rounder in the starting XI unless someone is a pure all-rounder like him.
