India has lowest train fares
Well unsurprisingly Indias railway fares are among the lowest in the world especially compared to our neighboring countries. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw the Indian Railways has not increased its fares since 2020.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha Vaishnaw informed that train fares in India continue to be among the lowest globally and significantly lower than Pakistan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The minister revealed that while a 350 km train journey in India costs just Rs 121 the same trip would cost Rs 436 Rs 323 and Rs 413 in Pakistan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively. Vaishnaw also emphasized that railways fares are significantly higher around 10 to 20 times in European countries compared to India.
Indian Railways sells tickets at subsidy
Notably Indian Railways sells train tickets to passengers at subsidized prices. Vaishnaw revealed that train tickets are sold at a 46 percent discount with the national transporter giving a whopping sum of Rs 56993 crore in total subsidy to all categories of passengers each year.
A 46 percent discount essentially means that a if a train ticket is prices at Rs 200 its sold to the passenger for just Rs 108 a subsidy of Rs 92 or 46%.
Responding to multiple queries in the Lok Sabha on restoring discounts given to various categories of train passengers Vaishnaw said that if the price of a ticket is Rs 100 then the railways charges just Rs 54 for it -- a discount of 46 percent.
A total of Rs 56993 crore subsidy is given every year by the Indian Railways to all classes of passengers Vaishnaw told the House.
Additionally the Indian Railways also offers concessions beyond this subsidy amount for several categories like four categories of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjans) 11 categories of patients and 8 categories of students.
