Bangkok: A building under construction fell in front of JJ Mall in Chatuchak market in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Mandalay, Myanmar, was felt across China, Vietnam, and Thailand.
Bangkok Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej said that up to 10 workers had been killed, 16 had been hurt, and 101 were missing at three construction sites in Bangkok, including the collapse of a 30-story government building, according to the Bangkok Post.
Bangkok and ten other provinces, including Chiang Rai, Phrae, Mae Hong Son, Lampang, Chai Nat, Lamphun, Loei, Samut Sakhon, Chiang Mai, and Kamphaeng Phet, were damaged by the earthquake, according to Pasakorn Boonyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
Two further earthquakes were reported in Mae Hong Son, according to a statement released by Thailand’s Meteorological Department on Saturday. At 11:21 p.m. (local time), a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Pai district at a depth of five kilometers. This was followed by a 2.0-magnitude earthquake at 3:24 a.m. (local time) at the same location.
Following an earthquake in Myanmar that rocked various regions of Thailand, including Bangkok, on Friday, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged people to be calm as authorities warn of potential aftershocks, according to the Bangkok Post.
Speaking during an urgent meeting in Phuket, Paetongtarn advised people to stay informed by following all pertinent authorities in order to prevent panic and false information. According to the Bangkok Post, she said, the network for official verified updates has been designated as state-owned broadcaster NBT.
On Friday, she was returning to Bangkok to continue observing and supervising the government’s earthquake reaction. The damage from the earthquake that rocked a number of structures in Thailand’s central, northern, and northeastern provinces has not yet been evaluated by the government.
Following strong earthquake tremors that were felt in Bangkok and other areas of Thailand, the Indian Embassy in Thailand released a statement on Friday stating that it is keeping a careful eye on the situation.
The embassy claims that there haven’t been any unfortunate instances affecting Indian nationals so far. To guarantee the security and welfare of Indian citizens in Thailand, the embassy works closely with Thai authorities.
“The Embassy is actively monitoring the situation in conjunction with the Thai authorities after strong earthquake shocks that were registered in Bangkok and other regions of Thailand. No unfortunate event involving an Indian national has been recorded as of yet. Indian nationals in Thailand are encouraged to call the emergency number +66 618819218 in the event of an emergency. The Indian Embassy in Thailand posted on X that all of its employees are safe, including those at the Consulate in Chiang Mai and the Embassy in Bangkok.
