After Narayana Murthy made a huge controversy over the 70 hour work week and L&T chairman’s statement on the 90 hour work week also sparked a huge debate now Microsoft founder Bill Gates 2-day work week is coming in just 10 years.
Gates predicted that in a future where AI may take over most things which are currently handled by humans. The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Bill Gates said “What will jobs be like? Should we just work like 2 or 3 days a week?”
Earlier also Gates has made remarks on shorter workweek predictions. In 2023 during the initial stage of ChatGPT he suggested that society can move towards a three-day workweek. “If you zoom out the purpose of life is not just to do jobs” Gates said on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast.
Shorter Work-week
Studies show that a shorter workweek will give different benefits to humanity. One company reported that reducing the workweek by one day increased productivity by 24%.
Tokyo’s Metropolitan Government recently implemented a four-day workweek to deal with Japan’s declining birth rates. Even CEO of JPMorgan Jamie Dimon had also spoken about the possibility of a three-and-a-half-day workweek though his company currently maintains a five-day office return policy.
As AI continues to reshape industries some professions will see major changes. Gates had once said doctors and teachers as two roles that AI could replace. He said “With AI over the next decade (intelligence) will become free and commonplace offering great medical advice and great tutoring.”
While other jobs like professional sports can remain with humans. Gates had predicted that AI may lead in manufacturing transportation and agriculture. “Over time those problems will be solved” he stated.
LinkedIn reports that AI literacy is the fastest-growing skill anticipated for 2025 shows the need for a forward-thinking mindset.
