Riyan Parag’s journey as the substitute captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2025 has been riddled with misfortune, and his luck seems to be taking a turn for the worse.
After a hard-fought six-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where the Royals posted 182/9 and restricted CSK to 176/6, Parag found himself facing another setback.
The youngest ever IPL captain was fined Rs 12 lakh for his team's slow overrate, the first offence under the IPL's Code of Conduct, adding another disappointment to his already challenging captaincy debut.
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Parag was fined INR 12 lakhs," IPL said in a release.
While the 23-year-old Parag had led RR to their first win of the season, this latest fine only added to the string of bad luck he's experienced as captain.
No mercy from Lady Luck
His highly anticipated debut as the first Assam-born male player to captain an IPL team was overshadowed by a series of unfortunate events.
Parag became the first RR captain to lose their opening two matches in consecutive seasons, a bitter milestone that further noted his ill-fated IPL run this year.
The season started with a crushing 44-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), where RR conceded a staggering 286 runs—second only to the highest total in IPL history.
The disappointment continued with an eight-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), making Parag’s first experience at the helm even more difficult.
With the pressures mounting and the unlucky streak continuing, the team is set for a face off with Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings on April 5 in Mullanpur.
