In their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate. Guwahati (Assam) [India].

The IPL confirmed in a statement on Monday that the Royals captain had violated the Code of Conduct and was therefore penalized.

“Riyan Parag, Captain, Rajasthan Royals has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 11 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings at the ACA Stadium, Guwahati on 30th March, 2025,” the IPL stated in a statement.

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Parag was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the statement said.

After Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, Riyan became the second captain to get a punishment in the current season of the lucrative tournament. Due to MI’s sluggish over-rate versus the Gujarat Titans, he received a similar punishment.

CSK won the toss and sent the hosts to bat to start the exciting match. An 82-run partnership between Sanju Samson (20 in 16 balls, with a four and a six) and Nitish Rana (81 in 33 balls, with six fours and six fours) helped the Royals recover after Yashasvi Jaiswal was out early.

Captain Riyan Parag later held one end steady but continued to run out of partners (37 in 28 balls, with two fours and two sixes). His last strokes helped his team to a respectable 182/9 in their 20 overs.

Rachin Ravindra was lost for a duck by CSK during the run-chase. Chennai remained in the game thanks to a 46-run partnership between captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi (23 in 19 balls, including two fours and a six).

CSK was reduced to 92/4 after Vijay Shankar (nine in six balls) and Shivam Dube (18 in 10 balls, with a single four and two sixes) fell early. With his tenacious 63 in 44 balls, seven fours, and a six, Gaikwad fought a solitary battle, but CSK’s defeat at 129/5 in 15.5 overs was a result of his removal.

It was up to Ravindra Jadeja (32* in 22 balls, with a maximum of two fours) and MS Dhoni (16 in 10 balls, with a four and a six) to reverse the course of events and save CSK from a precarious position. However, Rajasthan’s composure made sure they crossed the finish line.

Following two consecutive losses, RR is now in ninth place in the standings and has two points under their belt. CSK has two defeats and one victory, placing them in sixth place.
