Netflix is coming up with a Stranger Things documentary

OTT platform Netflix will release a documentary about the making of its stage show, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The documentary, entitled Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the play on the West End, where it opened in December 2023.

Netflix is coming forth with a documentary focused on the stage play The First Shadow hitting Broadway in New York City. As per reports, the documentary will be focused on the London iteration of the show.

Netflix is coming up with a Stranger Things documentary. According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary will premiere on Netflix April 15.

The news comes as Stranger Things: The First Shadow heads into its first Broadway preview Friday at Marriott Marquis Theatre. The show is scheduled to open April 22.

The play, written by Kate Trefry and directed by Stephen Daldry, with Justin Martin as co-director, serves as a prequel to the television series.

Set in 1959 Hawkins, Indiana, the story follows the Creel family as they seek a fresh start—particularly their teenage son, Henry, who hopes to escape his troubled past. At first, life seems promising: he makes friends and joins the school play. However, when a series of shocking crimes shakes the town, Henry is forced to confront a chilling reality—could he be connected to the horrors unfolding around him?

The Broadway production features a cast of 34, including Louis McCartney, who reprises his role as Henry Creel after originating the character in the West End, alongside Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight. The doc is produced by Angus Wall, Kent Kubena, Terry Leonard, and exec produced by Matt Bell.

The film’s synopsis: “With special behind-the-scenes access, follow the cast and crew of Stranger Things: The First Shadow as they race against time to prepare the ambitious, boundary-pushing stage show for its West End debut amid mounting fan and critic anticipation.”

“The challenge is to create a visceral experience for the audience, where they feel shock and awe, surprise and delight,” Stephen Daldry, the director of the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow told The Deadline. “You have to deliver that. The fusion of television and theater is about the speed of narrative and how you create it … There are moments in the show where you will think, “I don’t understand how they did that.”

“The first time we saw the play, we were blown away,” says Ross Duffer, who created TV’s Stranger Things with brother Matt Duffer, who adds about the stage show, “They pulled everything off, and then some. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of our lives.”
