Asia’s Longest Ropeway Coming To This Hill Station, Will Allow 2000 People To Travel Every Hour
Shimla is set to construct
Asia's longest ropeway, spanning 13.79 kilometres, in a landmark initiative aimed at boosting tourism and reducing traffic congestion in the popular
hill station. Once completed, the Tara Devi-Shimla
Ropeway will be the second-largest ropeway in the world after Bolivia’s Mi Teleférico, which covers 32 kilometres.
A Mega Infrastructure Project
According to the NDTV report, the ambitious project costs approximately Rs 1,734.40 crore and is under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the Himachal Pradesh government collaborating with the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation. The project has already commenced and is expected to transform the region’s transport landscape.
The ropeway will connect Maa Tara Devi to Sanjauli, covering an area of approximately 60 kilometres and integrating 15 key stations across Shimla and its surrounding areas. It will allow 2,000 passengers per hour to travel in both directions, significantly easing road congestion.
The ropeway will feature 660 cabins, each with a capacity of 8-10 passengers. These cabins will arrive at stations every 2 to 3 minutes, ensuring seamless connectivity. Additionally, 90 charging stations will be installed at the boarding points, and eco-friendly solar panels will be fitted onto the cabins, reinforcing the project's commitment to sustainability.
Station Points
It will have stations at Maa Tara Devi, Court Complex (Chakkar), Tutikandi Parking Area, ISBT, Tunnel No. 103, Railway Station, Victory Tunnel, Old Bus Stand, Boarding Area Station Near the Lift, Lakkar Bazaar Area, IGMC Hospital, Navbahar, Secretariat, and Sanjauli.
The project is being primarily funded by the New Development Bank, which is covering 80% of the costs, while the remaining 20% is being managed by the government. The bank has already approved advance tenders, and initial processes have been completed.
