A significant portion of Tata’s wealth is dedicated to charitable endeavours. However, Rs 800 crore worth of financial and physical assets have been bequeathed to his half-sisters, Shireen Jejeebhoy and Deanna Jejeebhoy, and former Tata Group employee, Mohini M. Dutta.

Each has received one-third of these properties, including bank fixed deposits, financial instruments, and valuable personal belongings such as luxury watches and paintings.

His brother, Jimmy Naval Tata, the sole surviving heir, has been granted a share of Tata’s Juhu bungalow, along with silver articles and select pieces of jewellery. Close friend Mehli Mistry has inherited Tata’s Alibaug bungalow, which Tata acknowledged as a property Mistry was instrumental in acquiring. Additionally, Mistry has received three firearms, including a .25 bore pistol.

The will, dated 23 February 2022, includes four codicils, legal modifications made post-signing. One codicil specifies that Tata’s investments in both listed and unlisted stocks, along with other unspecified assets, would be equally distributed between the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation and Trust.

Tata’s international holdings include Rs 40 crore worth of foreign assets, comprising land parcels in Seychelles, accounts with Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley, and shares in Alcoa Corp and Howmet Aerospace. The probate of a will is a legal process confirming its validity and granting the executors authority to manage and distribute assets per the deceased’s instructions. The executors in this case are lawyer Darius Kambatta, Mehli Mistry, and Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy. The final distribution will only take place following court certification, which could take up to six months.

Tata’s deep affection for his pets is evident in his will, with a corpus of Rs 12 lakh created for their care. Each pet is to receive Rs 30,000 per quarter. Additionally, a student loan extended to his executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu, has been waived, along with an interest-free education loan granted to neighbour Jake Malite.

Tata’s personal collection of 65 luxury watches, including brands such as Bvlgari, Patek Philippe, Tissot, and Audemars Piguet, has been included in the asset list.

Ratan Tata’s will is a testament to his lifelong commitment to philanthropy, ensuring that his wealth continues to serve society.
