Washington, DC: US Senator Cory Booker broke the record for the longest floor speech in the history of the modern Senate in a stunning show of resolve. According to CNN, Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, broke the record of 24 hours and 18 minutes set by the late Senator Strom Thurmond in 1957.

Booker promised to continue speaking as long as he was physically capable, starting his address at 7 p.m. local time on Monday and continuing all night. His lengthy address is a protest against the policies of the Trump administration.

According to CNN, Booker is not trying to obstruct any particular legislation, so although the speech has caused a delay in Senate legislative work, it is mostly symbolic.

Booker’s remarks coincide with growing voter pressure on Democrats to oppose Trump more forcefully. Since they have few other alternatives in Washington, Booker’s speech is the most well-known demonstration by a Democratic congressman during Trump’s second administration.

As he blasted a variety of topics throughout his address, including Elon Musk’s attempts to restructure the federal government under Trump and possible cutbacks to important health care programs for millions of Americans, Booker warned that the “country is in crisis.”

“I rise with the intention of disrupting the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able,” Booker said at the beginning of his speech. “I rise tonight because I believe sincerely that our country is in crisis,” Booker said.

“In just 71 days, the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, and the core foundations of our democracy,” Booker said. “American times are not typical right now. Additionally, the US Senate shouldn’t treat them that way.

CNN reports that Booker fielded questions from a variety of Democratic Senate colleagues, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who joined him on the floor for extended periods of time as a show of support.
