H-1B visa: In a major worry for Indians working for tech giants like Amazon Google Apple Microsoft Meta among others in the United States major tech companies have reportedly issued advisories for H-1B visa holders urging them to avoid leaving the country fearing that they may not be allowed to return.
Indian H-1B visa holders cancel travel plans
According to a Washington Post report two H-1B holders told the publication that they cancelled their plans to travel to India over concerns that they would not be allowed to re-entry to the United States (US). As per the Post one Indian workers expressed concern over the Trump administration revoking birthright citizenship worried that any future child might end up stateless neither American nor Indian if the law is changed.
Theres an assumption that everybody who is not a US citizen might be here illegally the report quoted another Indian H-1B worker as saying.
According to the reports the uncertainty stemming out of US President Donald Trump tightening Visa rules has birthed new challenges for Indian H-1B visa holders with some workers saying that they are now prompted to always carry documentation while in public.
US tech industry is heavily reliant on foreign workers especially Indians with Indias IT outsourcing firms like Infosys and Cognizant accounting for a major chunk of H-1B applications.
One HR representative at Silicon Valley told the Post that companies are paying for expedited processing of visa extensions to counteract delays-costs that add up. The representative said the uncertainty definitely impacts their performance as the threat is looming that some action will be taken against them.
Indians face long wait times for residency
Due to per-country limits on Green Cards Indian tech workers face a long arduous path towards acquiring permanent residency in the US as many Indians have to wait for decades for a Green Card despite working for major companies.
In a social media post Aravind Srinivas CEO of Perplexity-- an AI firm recently valued at $9 billion-- revealed that he has been waiting three years for a green card despite founding a company that employs hundreds.
While Trump has recently has recently spoken positively about H-1B visa his broader stance of his administration on immigration has raised concerns among Indian workers.
Indian tech workers make up the largest group of H-1B visa holders in the United States. Under the H-1B program around 65000 visas are approved annual through a lottery system and Indians receive the highest number of these approvals followed by Chinese and Canadian nationals.
Major employers include tech titans like Amazon Google Meta Microsoft and Apple.
