Telangana Clears 400 Acres of Forest in Kancha Gachibowli Despite Protests by Hyderabad University Students:

The Telangana government has cleared 400 acres of forest land in Kancha Gachibowli village, located in the Rangareddy district, despite strong opposition from environmental activists and students of the University of Hyderabad. The land is set to be auctioned to generate an estimated Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 crore in revenue.

Planned Urban Development vs Environmental Concerns

Officials plan to convert the area into world-class IT parks and premium urban living spaces, reflecting Hyderabad’s growing status as a global tech hub. However, the clearance has sparked concerns about biodiversity loss, rising temperatures, and ecological damage.

Reports suggest that temperatures in the region could rise by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius due to the destruction of forest cover. Moreover, more than 455 species of flora and fauna, including herbs, shrubs, and wildlife, are at risk of permanent displacement.

Student Protests and Police Action

Over the past week, students from the University of Hyderabad have staged protests against the forest clearance. On Tuesday, Cyberabad Police detained more than 50 students, citing security and public order concerns.

Activists claim that the Kancha Gachibowli Forest (KGF) was one of the last remaining green patches in the region and vital for maintaining ecological balance.

Legal Action and Upcoming Hearing

The matter has now reached the judiciary. A case concerning the ecological impact of the clearance is scheduled for hearing in the Telangana High Court on April 7. Environmentalists hope the court will intervene to halt or reverse the project, or impose strict environmental regulations.
