Bollywood and Hollywood have always had a competitive edge. Whether its the storytelling or the direction Bollywood has been attempting to keep up with international standards of storytelling and visuals for quite some time now. One big step in that direction a movie that wasnt merely produced to entertain but to create an entire new superhero-type universe in Indian cinema known as the Astraverse. Rather than being just a film it was envisioned as a larger-than-life experience.
Released on 9th September 2022 directed by Ayan Mukerji the name of the movie is Brahmastra Part One: Shiva is the narrative of a young man Shiva (played by Ranbir Kapoor) who leads a normal life until he realises that he possesses extraordinary powers and links with the powerful and ancient Brahmastra. His search for self and love with Isha (played by Alia Bhatt) is the foundation of the plot. Shiva introduces audiences to a fantasy world where ancient astras meet modern storytelling.
Besides the plot and direction what makes Brahmastra stand out is its massive budget. According to reports the film was produced on a gigantic ₹410 crore—Excluding the money spent on promotion or marketing. Much of the budget was spent on producing top-notch VFX (visual effects) which provided the film with a magical larger-than-life quality. From glowing astras to blazing battles the film seemed like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster.
As per Bollywood Hungama Brahmastra became the most expensive Hindi film ever produced accounting for more than high-budget films such as Thugs of Hindostan (₹310 crore) 2.0 and Saaho. The film features a power-packed cast of Amitabh Bachchan Nagarjuna Mouni Roy and even a surprise cameo of SRK that generated buzz among fans.
The movie was designed as a trilogy and this first installment was only the start of the Astraverse. It provided the audience with a glimpse of something new in Bollywood storytelling—a combination of mythology fantasy love and adventure with powerful visual effects.
Despite the mixed reviews the movie was a success in pulling crowds and getting massive footfalls in theatres post-pandemic. Audiences enjoyed the big pictures the action scenes and the new idea. It also caused people to go back to theaters after a gap of many years due to the pandemic.
With its massive scale and original vision Brahmastra proved that Bollywood is set to embrace new genres and be bold creatively. It was not just a film but a new trajectory in cinema that India hadnt seen before.
