New Delhi: Following a poor performance in the recent Test summer and his subsequent withdrawal from the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharmas position as Test captain is now uncertain. His future in Test cricket will be decided before the team is announced for the upcoming series against England. Rohit Sharmas recent poor performance in Test cricket has fueled retirement speculation. His low scores against New Zealand (91 runs in three matches) and in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (31 runs in six innings) coincide with Indias first-ever 3-0 home Test series defeat. Approaching his 38th birthday his future in the longest format is uncertain. Rohit Sharma strongly implied he will captain Indias Test team in the upcoming five-match series against England beginning their 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. This series starts June 20th in Leeds. During a recent Beyond23 Cricket Podcast interview 2025 World Cup-winning captain Michael Clarke expressed his well wishes to Rohit Sharma for the upcoming England series. Sharma responded that India would strive to do their best confirming his intention to travel to England and continue his role as captain. Rohit Sharma addressed the controversy surrounding his absence from the Sydney Test. He clarified that he chose to sit out the match rather than being dropped to give Shubman Gill a chance to play a decision he discussed with coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar resulting in differing opinions within the team. I had to be honest to myself. I did not want to put myself there as other guys were struggling as well. We somehow wanted Gill to play. Such a good player. We wanted him to play. If I am not hitting the ball well things can change. I spoke to the coach and selector. They agreed and disagreed. There was an argument around it. You try and put the team first and make the decision accordingly. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not said Rohit.
