Taiwan-based electronics giant Wistron has partnered with Shapoorji Pallonji a leading construction company to build its new laptop manufacturing plant near Bengaluru as part of a major investment plan worth Rs. 1500 crore according to reports. The deal has been signed between ICT Service Management Solutions—a subsidiary of Wistron—and Shapoorji Pallonji to handle the construction of the facility. The construction contract is estimated to be worth around USD 30 million.
Earlier in February 2024 Wistron through its local arm ICT signed an MoU with the Karnataka government to set up the plant. As part of this deal the government allocated a 32-acre land parcel at the Hi-Tech Defence & Aerospace Park in Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The project is expected to generate around 3000 jobs with plans to export more than half of the laptops produced at the factory.
Initially Wistron had planned to invest USD 40 million (Rs. 350 crore) for the construction. However this figure was later revised to USD 50 million (around Rs. 450 crore). Construction work is expected to begin soon and if everything goes as planned production is set to begin by January 2026.
In October 2023 Wistron officially stepped away from Apple iPhone manufacturing in India by selling its entire stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India)—its iPhone assembly unit in Karnataka—to Tata Electronics. The deal valued at USD 131 million (more than Rs. 1000 crore) marked a historic moment as Tata became the first Indian company to assemble iPhones. The acquisition was made by Tata Electronics through the purchase of Wistron India’s operations from SMS InfoComm (Singapore) and Wistron Hong Kong Limited.
Despite leaving the iPhone assembly business Wistron has not completely withdrawn from India. The company still operates in the country through three subsidiaries:
ICT Service Management Solutions – Focuses on import-export repair services and customer support operations.
Smartiply India – Works on building internet platforms and developing Internet of Things (IoT) products.
Wistron Automotive Electronics (India) – Specializes in the design R&D and production of automotive electronic components.
Wistrons latest move is through ICT which is setting up a laptop manufacturing unit near Bengaluru. The plant will act as a contract manufacturer for global laptop brands. Apart from assembling laptops the facility will also offer services like warranty repairs inventory handling and logistics management further strengthening Wistron’s diversified footprint in India.
