In the second round of the Badminton Asia Championships, PV Sindhu advances while Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy are eliminated

Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy were eliminated from the Badminton Asia Championships 2025 on Wednesday, as ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu easily advanced to the second round.

In a 44-minute match, Sindhu, ranked 17th in the women’s singles badminton rankings, easily defeated Indonesia’s Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, ranked 36th in the world, 21-15, 21-19, according to Olympics.com.

Lakshya Sen, a semifinalist in Paris 2024, lost against Chinese Taipei’s world No. 14 Lee Chia-hao in consecutive games and was eliminated in the first round.

The first game was a fierce contest. Before the Chinese Taipei shuttler won the first set with three straight points, Lakshya Sen and Lee Chia-hao faced off, with the score at one point standing at 18-18.

In the rather more unbalanced second game, Lakshya Sen lost 21-18, 21-10 as he was unable to keep up with Lee Chia-hao. In as many games, this was Lakshya’s second loss against Lee Chia-hao.

Despite their best efforts, HS Prannoy lost to Lu Guangzu of China in the other men’s singles bouts.

The gold champion from the Commonwealth Games, HS Prannoy, lost 21-16, 12-21, 21-11, his fourth first-round loss in six competitions this year.

In contrast, Kiran George defeated Dmitriy Panarin of Kazakhstan 21-16, 21-8 to advance to the second round of the Badminton Asia Championships.

Following a 20-22, 21-12, 21-10 comeback victory against Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand, Priyanshu Rajawat also progressed.

In a 31-minute encounter, China’s Han Yue, ranked third in the women’s singles badminton rankings, defeated world No. 49 Aakarshi Kashyap 21-13, 21-7.

Additionally, former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand defeated Anupama Upadhyaya 21-13, 21-14.

World No. 15 Gao Fang Jie defeated Malvika Bansod, who is ranked 22nd in the women’s singles rankings. The silver medallist from the Asian Games defeated Bansod 21-14, 21-8.

Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi defeated Madhuka Dulanjana and Lahiru Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka 21-3, 21-12, to advance to the next round of the Badminton Asia Championships in the men’s doubles.

However, after losing to Chiu Hsiang-chieh and Wang Chi-lin of Chinese Taipei 21-19, 21-12, Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Sai Pratheek K were eliminated in the first round.

In other news, Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo-yun and Yu Chien-Hui defeated Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra 21-11, 21-13, ending India’s bid in the women’s doubles division.
