Instagram Tests Code-Locked Reels Feature to Let Creators Share Exclusive Content:
News Update April 10, 2025 10:24 PM

Instagram is currently testing a new feature that allows creators to lock their Reels, making them viewable only when followers enter the correct keyword or passcode. The concept is similar to solving a digital puzzle — viewers must crack a clue to access the content.

TechCrunch first noticed this feature when Instagram’s Design team shared a Reel locked behind a code. They also included a small hint. After entering the correct word, users saw an animated “coming soon” banner, likely teasing the launch of the team’s Threads account.

New Way to Boost Engagement and Share Hidden Content

Although Instagram hasn’t confirmed an official rollout, this feature could give creators a fun tool to connect with followers. They might ask fans to guess something personal — like a pet’s name or a favorite song — to unlock exclusive videos, adding a game-like experience to Reels.

This approach builds on Instagram’s previous option to hide Stories and allow access only via direct messages. The new feature simplifies the process — no DMs needed, just a keyword to view the content.

Official Launch Still Unconfirmed

Instagram hasn’t announced when or if the code-locked Reels will be available more broadly. For now, it remains in the experimental phase. But if it’s officially released, it could introduce a creative way for creators to reward their most engaged followers with special content.
