Since the beginning of 2025 ByteDance co-founder Zhang Yiming has seen his wealth jump by nearly USD 14 billion—even as some of the world’s richest like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have lost massive sums. Musks net worth has dropped by USD 135 billion while Bezos has seen a USD 43 billion dip. Zhang’s net worth has grown by 31 per cent this year alone reaching USD 57.5 billion. This rise has made him the richest person in China and the third-richest in Asia just behind India’s Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index.
Zhang co-founded ByteDance the company behind popular platforms like TikTok and Toutiao. Based in Beijing ByteDance now serves over a billion users worldwide and reportedly brought in more than $110 billion in revenue in 2023.
He’s not the only one seeing big gains. Billionaires Jeff Yass and Warren Buffett have also added $11.5 billion each to their fortunes this year. Yass who co-founded Susquehanna International Group—a major trading firm—also benefits from the company’s estimated 15 per cent stake in ByteDance.
Warren Buffett now the world’s fourth-richest person has seen his wealth rise by USD 11.5 billion this year bringing his total net worth to USD 153.5 billion. He’s one of just two people in the top 20 of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index to have added to their fortunes in 2025. Meanwhile ByteDance’s Zhang Yiming is ranked 23rd globally.
On the flip side Elon Musk has taken the biggest financial hit among the ultra-wealthy. A major global market downturn—sparked by fresh tariff moves from President Donald Trump—has caused a steep selloff wiping trillions from stock markets. Tesla shares nosedived by 17.5 per cent in just three trading days leading up to Monday April 7 slashing USD 159 billion from the company’s value and dropping its market cap to USD 750 billion. Musk owns about 13 per cent of Tesla and 42 per cent of SpaceX which was last valued at around USD 350 billion in late 2024.
Other major tech billionaires haven’t been spared either. Larry Ellison of Oracle has lost USD 45 billion this year and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is down by USD 43 billion. Michael Dell and Alphabet’s Larry Page have each seen their fortunes shrink by USD 35 billion since January.
