AR Rahman was born as Dilip Kumar in a Hindu family in Rajagopala Madras Tamil Nadu. When Rahman was 4 years old his interest in music took over him and he started devoting his time there.
After Rahmans father passed away he was forced to pick up odd jobs in order to provide for his family. It was then that he met a famous colleague Qadri Sahab and was influenced by his values and teachings. Hence he decided to convert to Islam along with his mother and sisters at the age of 23.
In an interview with Karan Thapar Rahman said There was a Sufi who was treating him a few days before he died. We later met him after 7–8 years and then we adopted another spiritual path which gave us peace.
