Vikram Chopra comes from Raebareli Uttar Pradesh and is now a big figure in the business world. Vikram Chopra took education from IIT Bombay. Between 2001 and 2006 he did engineering and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. After graduation he started his career as an analyst at McKinsey & Company where he worked for three years and later joined Sequoia Capital as an investment analyst.
In 2012 Vikram founded FabFurnish a startup in the home décor space. However after three years of effort the venture did not work. He decided to work on the next big idea.
Founding Cars24
In 2015 Vikram co-founded Cars24 identifying a gap in India’s used car market. Buying or selling a used car was dependent on agents. Vikram started working on an organized platform to simplify the process and build transparency.
Cars24 gave options to sellers to sell their cars directly to verified buyers with added features like fast payments hassle-free RC (Registration Certificate) transfers and accurate car valuation with the help of artificial intelligence.
Cars24 Growth
In its first year Cars24 raised Rs 32 crore in funding and expanded in Delhi-NCR Mumbai and Bengaluru. By the end of 2015 Cars24 opened 50 branches across 12 cities and did the sale of over 1 lakh cars.
By 2018 Cars24 had raised an additional Rs 340 crore from investors like Sequoia Capital and achieved a valuation of Rs 1740 crore. The company faced competition from giants like OLX Droom and Mahindra First Choice But Vikram kept introducing innovative features like instant payments doorstep service and B2B auctions for dealers.
Cars24 revolutionized India’s used car market and made it into a Ts 28000 crore enterprise. Cars24 also launched the concept of ‘Sell Your Car in One Visit’ and reduced the need for multiple trips to sell a car. The company tied up with Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni as its brand ambassador.
It also began operations in international markets like the UAE Australia and Southeast Asia. The company now sale 1.5 lakh cars annually with a revenue of Rs 2270 crore. In 2017 Cars24 raised Rs 1510 crore from DST Global and became the first Indian unicorn in the used car space. The platform now has 65% of India’s organized used car market. With over 15 million app downloads 200+ branches in 200 cities and monthly transactions exceeding 2 lakh.
