The Ayushman Bharat Yojana, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), is one of India’s most significant health insurance schemes. Launched by the Government of India, its aim is to provide cashless treatment up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for economically weaker sections of society.
However, not every illness or medical condition is covered under this scheme. Recently, the government revised the list of covered treatments and excluded 196 medical conditions from the free treatment list. If you plan to use your Ayushman card, it’s important to understand both what is included and what’s not.
Here are some of the major treatments and conditions not included under the scheme:
Regular doctor visits and consultations that don’t require hospital admission are not covered.
If a patient is admitted solely for tests and ends up buying supplements like vitamins or protein, the scheme won’t cover those costs.
Cosmetic dental procedures such as tooth alignment, root canal treatment, dental implants, cavity fillings, or periodontal treatments are not included—unless it's related to trauma or tumors.
Advanced reproductive treatments like IVF or other infertility procedures are excluded.
Surgeries purely for cosmetic reasons—such as fat reduction, anti-aging, tattoo removal by laser, or other aesthetic enhancements—are not covered.
Despite some exclusions, the scheme covers a wide range of serious medical conditions. Beneficiaries can receive free treatment up to ₹5 lakh for:
Cardiology
Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery
General Surgery
Oncology (Medical, Radiation & Surgical)
Orthopedics
Neurosurgery
Neonatal care
Emergency care
Pediatrics & Pediatric Surgery
Urology
Organ & Tissue Transplants
ENT, Eye & Dental surgeries (if medically necessary)
Gynecology & Obstetrics
Infectious Diseases
Interventional Neuroradiology
Psychiatry and mental health packages
Plastic and reconstructive surgeries (medically indicated)
Not everyone qualifies for the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The following categories are excluded:
Employees working in the organized sector
Individuals who are already covered under ESIC (Employees’ State Insurance Corporation)
Government employees or those with existing health benefits from the government

Ayushman Bharat is a revolutionary initiative, but being aware of what’s covered—and what’s not—can save you from surprises during medical emergencies. Always verify your eligibility and understand the scheme’s coverage before relying on it.
