The Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex.
This means that only people who are born female should be protected from discrimination as a woman under the Act in a landmark ruling
It follows a series of challenges brought by For Women Scotland (FWS), a women's rights campaign group, over the in Scottish legislation mandating 50% female representation on public boards.
Maya Forstater, Sex Matters' executive director, exclaimed "biology wins!" following the verdict.
Former Labour MP Rosie Duffield, who now sits as an independent, said: "PHEW!"
The dispute centred on whether or not somebody with a gender recognition certificate recognising their gender as female should be treated as a woman under the 2010
The outcome will have far-reaching implications on how sex-based rights apply across Scotland, England and Wales. It will have major implications for sex change operations, access to gender recognition certificates and access to women-only spaces.
