Arsenal last reached the Champions League semifinal in the 2008-09 season when it beat another Spanish side, Villarreal, in the quarterfinals.

It faced Manchester United in the semifinals, to which it lost 1-4 on aggregate in a battle that saw a face-off of two legendary manager Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.
