Pakistan batting all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has given his support for to take over the national team captaincy, insisting that his backing is based on performance, not on personal ties. The two cricketers currently play together for the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“For me, if you compare everywhere, I think Rizwan is the best option. It’s not because he is my friend or that we play for the same club, Multan Sultans. If you assess our options, Rizwan is the best choice, and he can improve,” Iftikhar said in an interview.

His statement comes at a time when Rizwan’s leadership is under increasing scrutiny, particularly after Pakistan's poor performances in the 2025 Champions Trophy and the recent tour of New Zealand. Currently, the T20I side is being led by Salman Ali Agha, which has fueled further discussions around a potential change in ODI captaincy as well.

The wicketkeeper’s track record in franchise cricket strengthens Iftikhar’s opinion. The right-handed batter has captained the for the past four PSL seasons, leading them to four consecutive finals, securing the title in 2021. His consistency at the franchise level has made him a strong candidate for the national leadership role.

However, the Sultans have had a slow start in the ongoing edition of the PSL, losing both of their opening matches. Despite the team’s struggles, the top-order batter has impressed individually, scoring 143 runs in two games, including a century in the opening match against Karachi Kings.

While his form with the bat remains exceptional, there are questions surrounding his captaincy. With multiple contenders emerging, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to finalise a decision. Nevertheless, Iftikhar’s support adds weight to Rizwan’s case and could influence the board's intentions on leadership roles moving forward.
