Charlie Chaplin whom the world has been watching on screen and seeing whom hardly anyone can stop laughing has had a lot of sorrows and troubles in his personal life. Charlie Chaplin who was adept at weaving stories in the hearts of the audience with his art and acting without speaking and who made the audience roll with laughter with his comedy has been the uncrowned king of the world of laughter and comedy. However the troubles he faced in his childhood at the age of playing and jumping just imagining them makes one shudder. Charlie Chaplins full name is Charles Spencer Chaplin who was famous in the history of the film world as Charlie Chaplin. His mere presence on screen was a guarantee of a smile on the audiences face. Chaplin an expert in making people laugh was known not only for his comic timing but also for his amazing expressions with special costumes. He was born on 16 April 1889 in London. He became a worldwide icon through his onscreen character The Tramp. Chaplins childhood in London was spent in poverty and hardship. His mother struggled financially away from his fathers presence. He was sent to the workhouse twice before the age of 9. His mother was sent to a mental asylum His mother was committed to a mental asylum when he was 14. Chaplin began performing at an early age and worked as a stage performer and comedian touring music halls. At the age of 19 he was signed by the Fred Karno Company which took him to the United States. He was discovered by the film industry and began appearing at Keystone Studios in 1914. He soon adopted The Tramp as his screen persona. Forced to leave the US The 1940s were a period of controversy for Chaplin and his popularity declined rapidly. He was accused of being a communist sympathiser and some members of the press and public were upset by his involvement in paternity suits and his marriage to much younger women. He was investigated by the FBI and forced to leave the US. He moved to Switzerland in 1952. Life full of poverty and hardship Chaplins parents separated around 1891. The following year Hannah gave birth to a third son George Wheeler Dryden fathered by music hall performer Leo Dryden. Their lives were marked by poverty and hardship. Chaplins early years were spent in Londons Kennington district with his mother and brother Sydney. Hannah had no means of earning money other than occasional nursing and dressmaking and Chaplin Sr. provided no financial support. As conditions worsened Chaplin was sent to the Lambeth Workhouse at age 7. Stayed alone for many days Hannah had a brief respite from the illness but in May 1903 she fell ill again. Chaplin 14 at the time was tasked with driving his mother to the hospital from where she was sent back to Cane Hill. She stayed alone for several days foraging for food and sometimes sleeping in the open. Hannah was released from there after eight months but her illness returned in March 1905 this time permanently. We could do nothing but accept poor mothers fate Chaplin later wrote. Charlie Chaplin married four times Many may not know that Charlie Chaplin married four times.
