Synopsis

West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has requested Governor CV Ananda Bose to postpone his visit to Murshidabad, citing ongoing confidence-building measures following violent protests over the Waqf Amendment Act. Banerjee also criticized the Union Home Minister's decision to expand the BSF's jurisdiction, alleging it hinders local police efforts to monitor outsiders and data sharing.

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday appealed to governor CV Ananda Bose to wait for a few more days before going to Murshidabad, as confidence building measures are ongoing and peace is returning in the district. Banerjee said she has also decided not to go to Murshidabad for now.

Earlier, governor Bose said he would visit Murshidabad where violent protests over the Waqf Amendment Act have resulted in three deaths. “I have been to Delhi. I am not sharing other details. I am going to the field and will do a reality check myself. After talking to all sections of the society, I will share further details,” he said. “My sympathies are with the families. It is an emotional moment. The families have come to meet me. They expressed fear and that is genuine."

Banerjee said she has also asked the state women’s commission not to visit the district for now. “I will request all, except the locals, to stay away from Murshidabad. Peace has returned. Now, confidence building is being done by the administration,” she said.

The CM said a special investigation team has been formed to investigate the violence.

Bose later said the request of the CM has been taken seriously, but he is going to “visit the field and see for myself the reality. Only then I will be able to think about the future course of action and will be able to give reports to the concerned authorities.”

Some people from Murshidabad, who took refuge in Malda after the violence, visited the governor Thursday, led by BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar. They sought a permanent BSF camp in their locality.

CM attacks union home minister, BSF
Banerjee said the central government has expanded the jurisdiction of the BSF to 50 km from the international border, which was affecting the work of the local police in maintaining data on outsiders.

“Earlier the BSF had 5km under their jurisdiction. The union home minister has been instrumental in increasing the jurisdiction to 50km … Our officers are not allowed to maintain data on outsiders. Earlier, data was kept by the state police, but the union home minister has withdrawn the data sharing process with the state government,” she alleged.

She said: “Ask the (union) home minister to visit Manipur and Tripura. Agencies are used and I spoke about that man yesterday.”

On Wednesday, she said the communal violence in Murshidabad was planned and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rein in union home minister Amit Shah.

Attacking the BJP, Banerjee said: “Hindus and Muslim should stay in peace. People from all religions should stay in peace. This is not a place for politics and you cannot do polarisation. I don’t care about them (politicians), I only care about the people.”
