LPG prices hiked by Rs 50 for all consumers, including Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries

In a move that impacts millions of households, the Indian government has increased LPG cylinder prices by ₹50 across the board — including for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). This marks the first hike for Ujjwala users after a prolonged subsidy cushion amid rising global energy costs.

The new prices come into effect from Tuesday, April 9, 2025. Ujjwala beneficiaries, who were paying ₹503 per cylinder in February 2025, will now pay ₹553, while non-Ujjwala users will see their retail price also rise by ₹50 per cylinder.

This price hike comes even as the number of PMUY beneficiaries has crossed 10.33 crore as of March 1, 2025, out of India’s 32.94 crore active domestic LPG connections.

The Oil Ministry defended the hike, citing a 63% jump in international LPG prices — from $385/MT in July 2023 to $629/MT in February 2025. Despite this, officials claimed that OMCs had absorbed much of the cost, resulting in a cumulative FY25 loss of over ₹41,000 crore.

The revision follows the government’s clearance in October 2024 for a fourth expansion of the Ujjwala scheme, which still has over 26 lakh pending applications across the country.
