A man has been charged with murder after the Vancouver festival tragedy claimed the lives of eleven people

CNN reported that 11 people were killed and scores more were injured after a vehicle crashed into a crowd at a Filipino heritage street event on Saturday night. The initial death toll was nine.

The suspect, identified by police as a 30-year-old male with a history of recorded interactions with authorities relating to mental health issues, was apprehended and restrained with the help of festivalgoers.

Authorities accused 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo with eight counts of second-degree murder late Sunday, with more charges anticipated, according to The New York Times.

According to Vancouver police, the victims were between the ages of five and sixty-five. At a news conference on Sunday, acting chief of police for Vancouver, Steve Rai, said, “Dozens more are injured, some critically, and some have not yet been identified.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney offered his condolences in the wake of the deadly incident at Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu festival. He also said that he spoke with Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim after the attack and reassured the city and the Filipino-Canadian community that the federal government is prepared to help.

Carney shared a post on X that said, “After the assault at last night’s Lapu Lapu festival, I had a conversation with Mayor Sim this afternoon. I expressed my sympathies and the full support of the federal government.
He said, “We will be there for the people of Vancouver and the Filipino-Canadian community as you heal from this tragedy.”

According to CNN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy his condolences to the Canadian people after a motorist who killed nine people and injured several others by crashing a vehicle into a throng at a street event honoring Filipino ancestry in Vancouver on Saturday night.

“A man killed and injured innocent people at the Filipino festival in Vancouver by crashing his car into the crowd. It was a heartbreaking tragedy.” Zelenskyy said on X on Sunday, “On this sad day, Ukrainians deeply share the pain of Canadians, Vancouver residents, and the Canadian Filipino community.”

The purpose of Saturday’s event was to celebrate diversity and culture by remembering an indigenous leader who battled against Spanish colonization and celebrating Lapu Lapu Day, an annual festival organized by the Filipino community in British Columbia.
