Once considered too daring or unconventional for everyday wear, sheer shirts have found their place in modern men's wardrobes. From Bollywood’s red carpets to street style at fashion weeks, the trend signals a clear shift in how Indian men are approaching personal style.

The appeal of sheer clothing lies in its ability to balance boldness with subtlety. Designers are offering options that range from barely-there mesh shirts to lightly translucent linen and cotton blends, making it easier for men to experiment without stepping too far out of their comfort zones. Whether worn under a structured blazer or simply paired with denims, the sheer shirt today feels less like a statement and more like an extension of individuality.

Culturally, the growing acceptance of sheer fabrics among men points to a larger move away from rigid ideas of masculinity. Fashion is increasingly becoming a space for self-expression rather than conformity, and men are embracing fabrics, cuts, and styling choices once deemed off-limits. Actors like Ranveer Singh and Vijay Varma, who often choose bold and experimental looks, have only further normalised the trend. Their looks have helped normalise a garment that, even five years ago, would have been seen as too provocative for Indian menswear.
Working in fashion has provided me with a front row seat to the styling of sheer shirts — from casual brunches to black-tie events. But it also begs the question: how often do we see them in real life?
I spend the better part of my professional life chronically online or at fashion events where the male species has evolved into a more fluid, fashionable version of themselves. But, ever so often, I go out into the wild only to find that the majority of men are still wearing the same old t-shirts and shorts.

As a woman and a fashion observer, I see only plus points. Sheer shirts, when styled right, have a nonchalant sensuality that is effortlessly attractive. They soften the sharp edges of a typical masculine wardrobe, making space for more fluidity, and more individuality.
That said, wearing sheer is not without its challenges. On a purely technical level, it demands an understanding of balance. Light layering is crucial — a plain tank top or even a muted printed shirt underneath can keep the look grounded.
Colour plays an important role too. Black, navy, and deep emeralds offer a more refined take, while whites, blush pinks, and icy greys can feel fresh and summery.
Textures matter more than you might think. The smoother the fabric (silk organza or soft mesh), the more formal it reads; while rougher textures like linen blends bring a relaxed, casual energy.

But if, as a man, you’re ready to plunge, styling sheer shirts is not as easy as I make it sound. It’s about finding what works for you, and the level of boldness you prefer when going transparent. I choose to surround myself with men that are woke enough to try it and, more importantly, to appreciate others who do. Styling sheer is a broad spectrum and I would say that the only thing you truly need to start on this journey is just a dash of confidence.

In a country where traditional menswear has long leaned towards structure and formality, the rise of the sheer shirt is a reminder: fashion is evolving, and so are the men who wear it.
And, if you’re ready to push the boundaries of your wardrobe, a sheer shirt could be the simplest and sharpest place to start.
