Rajasthan has achieved a remarkable milestone in India’s renewable energy journey by generating over 1,000 MW of solar power under the Pradhan Mantri Kusum Yojana (PM-KUSUM). This landmark not only strengthens the state's push toward energy independence but also transforms the daily lives of more than 1.7 lakh farmers who now receive reliable daytime electricity for irrigation.
This achievement marks a major shift in agricultural energy access, turning Rajasthan into a model state in the clean energy revolution.
The PM Kusum Yojana, launched by the Central Government, aims to promote solar-powered irrigation by replacing traditional agricultural pumps with solar-based systems. Rajasthan has embraced this initiative wholeheartedly, with the scheme now playing a vital role in making the state self-reliant in the energy sector.
By crossing the 1,000 MW solar generation mark, the state is not only ensuring electricity supply for its farmers but is also actively contributing to environmental sustainability and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
One of the key successes of the PM Kusum scheme in Rajasthan is the daytime availability of electricity, a major boon for the farming community. Over 170,000 farmers now use solar-powered irrigation pumps, allowing them to operate during daylight hours—eliminating the long-standing issue of erratic night-time power supply.
This has significantly improved the irrigation process, enhanced crop productivity, and reduced the stress caused by power outages. Farmers now enjoy economical, stable, and eco-friendly power, leading to better yields and a higher quality of life.
Rajasthan has seen a swift and strategic rollout of solar plants under various components of the scheme:
Under Component-A and Component-C, the state has installed 560 decentralized grid-connected solar power plants, which provide daytime electricity to over 70,000 agricultural consumers.
Component-B has enabled over 1 lakh farmers to directly connect their existing pumps to solar energy systems.
The widespread adoption and growing popularity of the scheme among the rural community reflect its on-ground impact and acceptance.
Looking ahead, Rajasthan is set to reinforce its status as India’s solar energy leader. The central government has approved an additional 6,000 MW solar capacity for the financial year 2024-25, along with the allocation of 2 lakh more solar pumps under Component-C.
In total, the state aims to install 12,000 MW of solar capacity over the next few years. With this ambitious expansion, Rajasthan is on track to become the largest contributor to India’s solar mission.
Over the past six months alone, Rajasthan has made significant strides:
134 solar plants (183 MW) were installed under Component-A.
196 plants (514 MW) were established under Component-C.
With a daily addition of 4 to 5 MW of solar capacity, the state's energy portfolio is growing stronger by the day. This rapid development showcases the Rajasthan government's commitment to energy reform and agricultural empowerment.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has announced a bold target: to ensure 100% daytime electricity access for all farmers by 2027. The PM Kusum Yojana is central to achieving this goal and has been declared a flagship scheme by the state government.
The Chief Minister's vision demonstrates a deep commitment to improving the livelihoods of farmers and ensuring long-term sustainability through clean energy.
With the successful implementation of PM Kusum Yojana, Rajasthan is not only lighting up fields but also powering rural progress. The state's proactive approach and clear roadmap position it as a national role model in the solar energy sector.
As the initiative scales further, it promises not just energy security but also a future where clean power fuels growth—for the land, the farmers, and the nation.
