Synopsis

Bengaluru faced widespread disruption due to overnight rain, causing waterlogging and traffic gridlocks, especially in north and east areas. Key intersections turned into streams, flooding homes in Sai Layout and Horamavu, leading to resident relocations.

A fresh spell of overnight rain on Sunday plunged Bengaluru into chaos, with widespread waterlogging, traffic gridlocks, and significant disruption to daily life.

As thousands of commuters took to the roads on Monday morning, many were met with flooded streets, stalled vehicles, and crippling bottlenecks, particularly across north and east Bengaluru—home to the city's major IT parks and corporate hubs.

Several key intersections resembled flowing streams, with arterial roads submerged under knee-deep water. In Sai Layout and Horamavu, two of the hardest-hit residential areas, water entered homes, damaging electronics and furniture. Some residents were relocated to safer areas after floodwaters rose dramatically overnight.

Traffic in Disarray: Police issue advisories

The Bengaluru Traffic Police issued multiple advisories throughout the morning, warning commuters to proceed with caution and avoid waterlogged routes. Among the worst-affected stretches were:

  • New BEL Road near Ayyappa Temple
  • Nagawara Bus Stop towards Sarayipalya
  • Allasandra to Yelahanka Circle corridor
  • Panathur Road underbridge (RUB) — submerged once again, disrupting commutes for tech workers
  • Silk Board to Agara Signal and Silk Board to Bellandur on the Outer Ring Road
  • Lowry Railway Underpass to Mahadevapura
  • Kensington Road towards Gurudwara

The Outer Ring Road, already strained by daily traffic volumes, saw severe congestion as rising waters choked key junctions. Public transport services slowed, and stranded commuters were seen wading through waterlogged streets.

Civic strain & public outcry

As visuals of partially submerged vehicles, flooded basements, and blocked roads circulated on social media, public criticism mounted against civic agencies—particularly the BBMP. Many residents cited poor drainage and inadequate monsoon preparedness as the cause of repeated urban flooding.

Fallen trees and damaged vehicles further complicated matters, leading to temporary road closures and worsened traffic snarls. Despite emergency measures, the city’s infrastructure once again appeared overwhelmed by the intensity of the rain.

Wider weather impact across Karnataka

Bengaluru’s deluge is part of a broader weather pattern affecting 23 districts in Karnataka, including Mysuru, Tumakuru, Kodagu, Raichur, and Belagavi, which are under an IMD yellow alert for heavy rainfall until Thursday.

The weather is being driven by a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and a trough extending from Telangana to North Tamil Nadu, pulling moisture across southern India.

With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities remain on high alert. Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak rain hours, avoid waterlogged roads, and monitor updates from official sources.
