Jasprit Bumrah is a “team man and selfless cricketer,” according to Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar, who also said that the veteran bowler would support recently selected Indian Test captain Shubman Gill during the England trip.
It was simpler to choose Shubman Gill as the new captain of India since Jasprit Bumrah, a selfless cricketer and true team player, told the selectors that he would not be able to play all Test matches due to a back injury. Gavaskar wrote in his MidDay column on Tuesday that Bumrah would be available for Gill to rely on and will also be in charge of the bowling group as they attempt to plan the dismissals of the English bats.
“Don’t be misled,” he said. “Bumrah will be available for Gill to rely on and will surely lead the bowling group as they attempt to plan the dismissals of the English batters.”
During their recent tour of Australia, India relied heavily on Jasprit Bumrah, who took 32 wickets in less than five Test matches. As a result, the star bowler hobbled out of the fifth and final match in Sydney. He had to recuperate from a back problem for an additional three months as a result of this accident.
For his exceptional achievements in all forms, Bumrah was awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year and the Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year in 2024.
With 11 wickets, Bumrah was instrumental in India’s victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas. Last year, he took an astounding 71 wickets in only 13 Test matches.
But as the stand-in captain in Australia toward the conclusion of this prosperous time, Bumrah had to exert himself. He said during the Melbourne Test that the heavy exertion ultimately took its toll.
During the fourth Test, when he also recorded the most overs (53.2) he bowled in a match, Bumrah was heard stating on the stump mic, “Bas ab nahi lag raha zor” (Enough for now, I am not able to go any more).
Bumrah put a lot of effort into recuperating and being ready to play cricket at the highest level again between early January and the first week of April. It took the right-arm bowler over three months to recover, even though India won the Champions Trophy without his help.
After missing a few early games, Bumrah was eventually given the all-clear to join his Indian Premier League squad, the Mumbai Indians. He has been playing at his best ever since, swiftly rising up the ranks of the top wicket-takers.
