Norway Chess 2025: Arjun Erigaisi defeats the World Champion while Gukesh loses consecutive games

Stavanger, Norway After the two top-ranked players in the world fought to a draw, Hikaru Nakamura upset Magnus Carlsen in an Armageddon playoff, and Arjun Erigaisi defeated D Gukesh in the second round of Norway Chess 2025 on Tuesday to take the lead.

So, after losing to world No. 1 Carlsen on the first day of the competition, reigning world champion Gukesh suffered his second loss in as many days. Gukesh is ranked last out of six players and is the only one who hasn’t earned a point in the competition so far.

Arjun had an incredible 5-0 record versus Gukesh in classical victories going into this match, and he’s now up to six. After a check with his knight, Erigaisi forced his opponent to surrender, thereby defeating Gukesh in 62 moves.

According to chess.com, GM Magnus Carlsen lost a dramatic Armageddon after failing to complete a winning assault before the U.S. great struck back, while Fabiano Caruana recovered with a magnificent victory against GM Wei Yi.

In round two of the Women’s Norway Chess 2025, Anna Muzychuk defeated Koneru Humpy in the sole classical match to establish a 1.5-point lead.

GMs Lei Tingjie and Ju Wenjun defeated GMs Vaishali Rameshbabu and Sara Khadem, respectively, in their armageddon encounters after precise draws.

Prior to this, Gukesh lost an exciting match against Magnus Carlsen. In addition to being Carlsen’s first classical match since Gukesh’s world championship victory, it was also his first time playing solo classical chess in over a year. In his return, Carlsen shown no evidence of rust, even after missing a full year of participation in classical events.

Erigaisi, who is now on 4.5 points after two games, will face another American, Fabiano Caruana, while Gukesh will face American Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura.
