Avocados are a perfectly creamy staple for toast, but there is nothing worse than starting your morning only to discover your has turned slimy and brown. Many people toss avocado slices into the fridge without thinking, but taking two minutes to them properly can save you much more money on your food shop.

This breakfast staple often expires before its time due to a process called oxidation, which is when the inside of avocados is exposed to air and causes the enzymes to start spoiling. However, Regina Mitchell, an executive chef and founder of , has shared that there is a simple way to keep avocados fresher for longer, as all you need is a little bit of lemon juice.

She said, "Lemon or any citrus juice slows oxidation, so putting lemon juice on the avocado can be helpful. It just may change the taste a little bit. Storing your halved avocado face down on a plate will also help stop any oxidation."

Lemon juice contains a natural preservative called citric acid, which lowers the pH of the enzymes to stop them reacting to oxygen.

This helps slow down discolouration, but the moisture in lemon juice will also act as a barrier to protect avocados, which also helps keep them fresh for longer.

How to store avocados properly

All you need to do is place an avocado slice in a bowl and drizzle the fresh inside with a generous amount of lemon juice. You can also use lime juice instead if you have any in the kitchen.

Next, wrap the avocado slice tightly in cling film as this also further prevents air from spoiling it, then simply place it in the fridge.

If you wish to be extra cautious, then you can store your avocado slice on a plate and then wrap it in cling film, which will also help block air from getting to it.

This will keep your avocado slices bright green, creamy and fresh for a few days longer, so you do not waste anything sitting in your fridge.

Is there a wrong way to store avocados?

It is often a popular storage hack on social media sites like TikTok to store avocados in water, but this does not work and can make them unsafe to eat.

Avocados are soft and porous, so letting them sit in water weakens the fruit and causes bacteria to multiply in the moisture.

Both air and bacteria will easily get into the avocado to make it toxic, mouldy and spoiled, so it is best to avoid this storage technique.

Lemon juice, on the other hand is will keep your avocados fresh and safe so you can store them in the fridge without any worry.

If you prefer, you can also , which is also a natural yet effective way to store them properly.
