Sonali Bendre's Literary Journey

Renowned actress and author Sonali Bendre, celebrated for her elegance on screen and her strength in life, is now making significant strides in the literary world.

In an open discussion, Bendre shared insights into her profound connection with literature and the inspiration behind her latest book, 'A Book of Books.'

This publication, created in partnership with her vibrant online community, Sonali's Book Club, transcends the boundaries of a typical memoir or novel, as she describes it as a tribute to the act of reading itself.

"This is fundamentally a collection of recommendations—books that have moved me, motivated me, or simply lingered in my mind," she explained, noting, "It’s an extension of the book club I founded eight years ago, which has grown to be one of the largest digital book clubs in South Asia."

A particularly compelling aspect of 'A Book of Books' is its encouragement for readers, especially those feeling pressured by societal expectations, to release any guilt associated with unfinished books.

"There’s no disgrace in not completing a book," Bendre emphasized, adding, "You aren’t obligated to read a book just because it has received accolades. If it doesn’t resonate with you, it’s perfectly fine to move on." She shared personal anecdotes, recalling a time during her cancer treatment when she recognized that some acclaimed books were emotionally taxing.

"I couldn’t get through 'A Little Life.' It’s an exceptional book, but it’s incredibly sorrowful. My book club friends kindly advised me to set it aside—and they were correct," she recounted.

'A Book of Books' caters to a diverse audience, from avid readers to children embarking on their reading adventures.

"On page 64, I discuss children who find reading challenging. It’s crucial for parents not to impose reading on them. The joy of reading should develop organically," she remarked.

The book is filled with creative concepts, such as examining genres through the perspective of Snow White’s seven dwarfs, or contemplating how reading can be the "most affordable way to travel," a belief she has cherished since childhood.

Although Bendre humbly claims she’s ‘not an exceptional writer,’ the insightful content of her book suggests otherwise.

In fact, it was HarperCollins that encouraged her to pursue this project after witnessing the influence of her book club’s suggestions.

She mentioned, "I initially declined. But when they proposed a book about the literature I adore, it felt like the right fit." The outcome is a work that intertwines memoir, guidance, reflection, and recommendations, all stemming from her profound passion for books.
